8 Safety Tips For Solo Female Travelers

Traveling on your own, especially for females, can be an exciting yet challenging adventure. But, with the right research, planning and common sense, the sky's the limit. As you'll be seen as more approachable than a couple or a group, meeting more people is one of the benefits of choosing to travel solo. You can also go wherever, do whatever and see the sights whenever you fancy. With no travel buddy, there's no need to compromise. Since you can only depend on yourself, you will also need to be more confident and self-reliant.

Staying safe is key for all solo travelers. Exercise these cautions, courtesy of Work the World, to make sure you'll have a great time as well as a fulfilling experience.
1. Be aware of your surroundings
Don't feel paranoid. Just make sure you're aware of what's going on around you. Act confident and listen to your instinct. If something feels off, it probably is.
2. Protect your belongings
When sitting down, keep your handbag on your lap. If you're at a bar or cafe, loop the shoulder strap of your bag around your chair.
3. Go out at night with a group
Remember: safety in numbers. Go out with people from your hostel, buddy up and decide on a common meeting place should you get lost.
4. Arrive during the day
Arriving in a new city can be confusing, especially at nighttime when help desks are closed and transport less frequent.
5. Sit next to women
When waiting for the bus or sitting down on the train, stay close to local women.
6. Keep your money safe
A money belt will prevent you from being pickpocketed. Otherwise, use a dummy wallet and keep only spare change in there.
7. Keep bling limited
Keep your expensive jewelry at home. If unmarried, consider wearing a fake wedding ring to prevent unwanted attention.
8. Watch your drinks
Pace yourself. Don't leave your drink unattended and don't get drunk if you're on your own.
